The “dupe” moment that made me try it

Summer always does this thing where it makes me suddenly care about being glowy from head to toe ☀️ and this year I kept seeing people talk about a super affordable tanning oil from a dollar store. You know that feeling when you’re just browsing the aisle “for fun” and then you end up holding a bottle like… okay, we’re doing this. That was me.

What pulled me in was the whole “luxury vs budget” vibe. I’ve used pricier tanning oils before, and honestly the main thing I want is: a nice-looking tan, a soft finish, and that beachy smell. I don’t need the bottle to look expensive if the results are there.

What it is (and what it is NOT)

This is a dark tanning oil style product with that tropical fragrance. The label is very clear about something important: no sunscreen. That means it’s not a “protect me from the sun” product. It’s a “make me look shiny and help me tan” type of product.

I’m saying that up front because a lot of people assume anything used in the sun automatically has protection built in. This one doesn’t. So if I’m using it outdoors, I treat it like a finishing oil layer and I pair it with separate sun protection. If I’m not willing to do that step, I don’t use it outside.

Texture + scent check (the first impression matters)

The texture is what you’d expect from a tanning oil: slick, spreadable, and it gives that instant sheen. It’s not one of those dry oils that disappears in two seconds. It sits on the skin longer, which can be a pro if I want that reflective glow, but it also means I have to be a little mindful about clothes, towels, and pool chairs.

The scent is very “tropical vacation.” Not subtle, but not offensive either. It’s the kind of smell that makes me want to put my hair up, throw on sunglasses, and pretend I’m on a beach even if I’m literally just in my backyard.

How I use it for the most even tan

I learned the hard way that tanning products look best when the skin is prepped. If I skip prep, I get random darker patches around ankles, knees, and elbows, and then I’m annoyed at myself for the next week.

I’ve tried more expensive tanning oils and I get why people like them—sometimes the packaging is nicer, sometimes the scent is more “perfume-y,” and sometimes they include added features like built-in sun protection. But when I’m judging purely on tan + glow, the budget one holds its own.

For me, the dealbreaker isn’t whether it’s “luxury.” It’s whether it’s:

• Even on the skin
• Comfortable to wear
• Not irritating
• Easy to spread
• Giving that tropical summer vibe

On those points, it performs surprisingly well.

The one con I won’t ignore

The con is simple but important: no sunscreen. If I’m using a tanning oil outdoors, I’m automatically thinking about sun safety. I’m not trying to “bake,” and I’m not trying to turn one tanning day into a week of angry skin.

So I treat tanning oil like an accessory, not the main protection step. If I want to be outside for a while, I plan it like this: sun protection, shade breaks, water, and I avoid the harshest peak hours when possible. The glow is cute, but not at the expense of my skin feeling wrecked.

Little hacks that made it easier (and less messy)

Use a small spray bottle for travel
I totally get why people decant tanning oil into a mini spray bottle. Full bottles can leak, and oil in a bag is a nightmare. A small spray bottle makes it easier to apply quickly and helps control how much comes out.

Wash hands right after
Oil on palms feels gross, and it can transfer to everything. I keep a towel nearby and wash my hands as soon as I’m done.

Let it set before getting dressed
If I put clothes on immediately, it can feel slippery and it can transfer. I give it a few minutes to settle in.

Be careful with light fabrics
Some oils can stain certain fabrics. I’m extra cautious with white swimsuits, light linen, and anything I’d cry over if it got marked up.

I also tried the viral idea of making a shimmering body oil by mixing a highlight product into a baby oil base. It’s honestly such a fun “glow hack” for photos, pool days, or just feeling extra. The shimmer makes the skin look airbrushed in sunlight.

That said, I treat that DIY mix as a cosmetic glow product, not something I rely on for any kind of protection. It’s more about looking shiny and smooth than anything else.

When I reach for it (and when I don’t)

I reach for it when:
• I want my legs to look glossy by the pool
• I’m doing a short outdoor moment and want that “summer skin” look
• My skin feels dry from swimming and I want it to look hydrated

I skip it when:
• I’m going to be outside for a long time and don’t want to deal with layering or reapplying properly
• My skin is irritated, freshly shaved, or feeling sensitive
• I’m wearing clothes that will show oil transfer easily

My honest rating (based on what it’s meant to do)

If I’m rating it as a budget tanning oil that gives glow and helps the tan look stronger, it’s a win for me. The scent is cute, the shine is real, and it makes my skin feel soft.

If someone wants a one-step “tan + protection” product, this isn’t that. It’s more like: glow first, then be smart about sun protection separately.

And that’s basically why it’s become one of my go-to summer bag items—especially for pool days when I want to look bronzy, feel moisturized, and keep things simple without carrying a giant bottle around.
